Im actually pretty surprised that happened considering the tunnels I work on have multiple overheight detection systems with backups and such. So a few things could have happened here :

- blew through the overheight warning (flashers, bells, etc)

- jumped on after the last inspection station (we have this problem as people take a service road to avoid the tolling gantry

- overheight system malfunction (someone’s getting fired)

- aired down before reaching the overheight detectors to avoid getting turned around (costly time increase, potential fine avoidance depending on state) and aired back up before entering the tube.

Similar happened on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel last month but it was a piece of construction equipment moving from one island to the next that was already beyond the tolling gantry so it wouldn’t have been detected by the overheight system.

These eyes save.. well they dont typically save lives but they save headaches.

I’m surprised it made it that far into the tunnel. Does the tunnel opening not have clearance bars?

Local news states that the Overheight Warning was triggered and evidently ignored. Also, the tunnel starts off much higher than the posted clearance, so visually it looks okay right until it doesn’t.

Truck was southbound; this is the southbound entrance to said tunnel immediately before entry :

Very easy to blow past if you’re not paying attention, and then you’re in a tunnel that can accommodate your truck until you’re most of the way through. It’s been a minute since I entered the city on this side (I live in the city) but I can’t remember any chains or other physical reminders preceding the tunnel besides the signboards and traffic lights.

Truck was stated to have left the tunnel under its own power, “lowered” (whether that’s suspension or tire pressure is not stated).

This is also not an infrequent issue.
